Nick draws is inspiration from his community, St Thomas, Swansea, South Wales and the surrounding valleys such as Rhonnda with a unique emphasis on the diverse culture that makes up these communities. Known as the Welsh Lowry his paintings capturing the diversity of everyday life from tightly packed terraced houses on the hillside, children with runny noses and scuffed knees playing in the street; football, hopscotch, skipping, old men walking their dogs even people running for the bus.
Nick Holly is a regular exhibitor at The Albany, people are familiar with his chronicles of ordinary life; Although his paintings suggest a melancholy atmosphere they provide however a colourful insight into his chosen subject. Nick Holly's signature splash of red adds relief to the blues and greys, which dominate his paintings; Nick insists that this is not an arbitrary technique. "There's a good reason for it"he says, "the red colour draws the eye into the painting. It's a technique I use to help people recall the scene.
